The Amazon rainforest is one of the richest ecosystems in the world. It is the largest rainforest and it is crucial to sustaining life on Earth. It has a total extension of 3.2 million square miles (828.8 million hectares), distributed in 9 countries: Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, Ecuador and French Guiana. The Amazon rainforest is the home of 10% of all known species. Through its river system flows 20% of all freshwater, there live more than 40 million people and more than 500 indigenous groups, and stores 22% of all irrecoverable carbon.
